Occupational Exposure Limits and Ratings for Active Ingredients:
The pharmaceutical industry is typically exposed to more than 85,000 drugs or their intermediates during the drug manufacturing process, but only about 1000 of them have a published credible Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) reference.
Therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has proposed the Occupational Exposure Band, OEB, a process that quickly and accurately classifies drugs into a specific level, to identify the exposure hazard level of those drugs for which there is no published occupational exposure limit OEL.
Laboratory operations are usually characterized by the following:
1. The location, frequency and duration of operations are not fixed;
2. Small doses, usually less than 1 kg;
3. The wide variety of active pharmaceutical products handled, with varying health hazards;
4. Different handling requirements for different chemicals and active pharmaceutical products;
5. The working content is not fixed, and it is difficult to get a specific operation procedure;
6. Operators are unable to fully grasp the health hazards of a wide range of chemicals and active pharmaceutical products;
7. Standardized occupation health management procedures are usually not established and implemented;
8. Lack of laboratory protective equipment, or poorly maintained equipment causing a safety hazard…
Weighing is a key step in the entire R&D analysis chain in pharmaceutical or physicochemical laboratories. The safety of the weighing process as well as the accuracy and efficiency of the results are essential for the health of the laboratory personnel and the advancement of the research project.
